Blindside waterproofing on shoring: installing the membrane before the wall exists

By Review.LivePublished 3 min readHow we write

The parkade excavation is ready for its property-line wall, and membrane installation is next. A gap in the shoring face crosses the intended sheet support. The reinforcing crew expects to move in tomorrow, leaving little access to that area afterwards.

Timber footing forms and capped reinforcing bars follow an excavated bank, with black sheeting on the soil behind them.

Treat blindside waterproofing as a membrane installation and protection handover before the structural wall exists. Confirm the approved support and details, then arrange its required review before reinforcement and concrete limit access. The pre-applied system guide below requires a stable supporting substrate, a defined concrete-facing orientation and a check for damage before placement. Its dimensions and accessories belong to that system; they are not generic blindside rules.

Check the interface before reinforcement arrives

  1. Match the assembly to the wall method. Confirm the specified membrane, shoring support and intended concrete placement method with the current approvals. A detail accepted for cast-in-place work does not establish suitability for another wall construction method.
  2. Walk the support with its owner. Locate gaps, irregularities and unsupported areas against the approved substrate requirements. Record the location and obtain the appropriate correction or backing decision rather than spanning a gap because the sheet appears to stay upright.
  3. Confirm orientation and fixing details. Use the approved instructions to identify which face meets the future concrete and the permitted support and fastening arrangement. Bring a sample and the current detail to the crew briefing instead of relying on colour memory.
  4. Resolve the interruptions. Locate tie-backs, sleeves, wall-to-slab transitions and construction joints. Obtain the applicable approved details and responsibility boundaries before allowing the main sheet to conceal an unfinished interface.
  5. Agree the reinforcing handover. Show the concrete and reinforcing leads the areas requiring protection, continued access or review. Keep storage, cutting and access arrangements within the approved site plan; do not assume reinforcement work leaves the membrane unchanged.
  6. Record readiness before placement. Arrange the required final review and damage check, with located correction evidence. Keep unresolved areas conditional and obtain the authorized release before concrete makes the face inaccessible.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing membrane orientation from appearance alone.
  • Installing across an unresolved support gap.
  • Recording acceptance before the final damage check required for placement.

Checklist

Blindside handover essentials

  • Approved assembly and concrete placement method.
  • Support conditions and correction references.
  • Correct face, fixing and seam details.
  • Resolved penetrations and transitions.
  • Protection and review before concrete placement.

Check your understanding

The sheet looks intact, but nobody has checked it since the reinforcement was installed. What remains to be confirmed?

Show the answer
Complete the project-required review and damage check before concrete placement, including the areas affected by later work. Confirm any correction and release through the authorized process. Earlier installation photographs do not establish the membrane’s present condition.
