Positive-side waterproofing on a foundation wall: stripped forms to protected membrane
At the fire hall basement, the excavator asks which foundation-wall length can be backfilled. One area has membrane installed, another still needs substrate correction and a third awaits its required review. The schedule has a single waterproofing-complete line for all three.

Plan positive-side foundation waterproofing as a chain of located handovers on the water-facing side of the completed wall. Follow the approved assembly’s actual preparation, details, review and protection sequence, then obtain the required backfill release. The sheet-system source below illustrates preparation, membrane installation, inspection and protection as separate work. It does not establish that every wall needs the same primer, drainage layer or wait before covering.
Make each wall length’s status visible
- Define the wall sections. Use gridlines or other clear drawing references to divide the work into manageable handovers. Put those boundaries on the look-ahead and progress record so every trade can identify the area being discussed.
- Confirm substrate readiness. Connect concrete corrections and required condition checks to each section’s acceptance record. Keep unaccepted areas held instead of letting the membrane start date become evidence that the concrete was suitable.
- Follow the approved assembly order. Identify preparation, applicable primer, field membrane and detail operations from the current system instructions. Show required accessories and interfaces on the work sheet without converting one manufacturer’s sequence into a universal instruction.
- Review what will be concealed. Arrange the required checks of joints, penetrations, transitions, terminations and repairs at the relevant stage. Retain location references and release conditions rather than collecting only a general photograph of the wall.
- Hand over the specified protection and drainage. Confirm the actual layers, connections and responsibility boundaries with the following leads. Check any required review before their installation hides the membrane or another part of the approved assembly.
- Confirm the backfill release separately. Have the responsible leads verify the project’s membrane, structural, protection and excavation conditions. Issue the specific released boundary and constraints to the backfill crew; membrane completion alone is not permission to load the wall.
Common mistakes
- Treating membrane installed as backfill authorized.
- Using one progress status for sections with different unresolved conditions.
- Concealing transitions before their required review.
Checklist
Track the wall through its handovers
- Marked section and current assembly.
- Accepted substrate and corrections.
- Field membrane and completed details.
- Required checks, repairs and release records.
- Protection and drainage handover.
- Separate backfill authorization and constraints.
Check your understanding
A section’s membrane is complete, but its structural backfill release is outstanding. What should its status say?
