Positive side or negative side: which face of the wall gets the waterproofing
The drawing shows a membrane beside the shoring, while a worker expects to apply it after stripping the wall forms. Another person suggests coating the inside later. The three approaches are being discussed as interchangeable, but they occupy different places in the wall sequence.

Positive-side waterproofing sits toward the water source outside the below-grade structure; negative-side treatment is applied on its interior face. Blindside waterproofing is a positive-side arrangement installed before the concrete where later exterior access is unavailable. These distinctions are described in the building-enclosure source below. Use them to read the section and sequence, not to select a substitute system without the designer and manufacturer’s assessment.
Read the faces before discussing the product
- Orient the section. Mark the occupied interior, concrete wall, surrounding soil or shoring and the expected water side using the project’s design information. Do not infer groundwater conditions from one dry visit to the excavation.
- Find the specified control layer. Trace the membrane or treatment on the section and identify its detail references. Check the legend rather than assuming a bold line is waterproofing or that every coating performs the same function.
- Check when that face is accessible. Ask the superintendent and responsible trade lead whether the specified layer is placed before or after the wall exists. Relate that answer to formwork, reinforcement and the planned handover.
- Follow its interfaces. Locate the slab connection, joints, penetrations and top termination in the current details. Raise any missing transition through the design process instead of allowing the field crew to fill the gap with an unrelated product.
- Confirm system and substrate suitability. Bring the specified product information and actual conditions to the responsible designer and manufacturer contact. State what differs from the detail; the name of a waterproofing family does not prove it suits this wall.
- Record the agreed sequence. Name the substrate handover, required reviews and protection owner before the next trade enters. Keep a proposed change awaiting approval until the project’s authorized process confirms it.
Common mistakes
- Treating blindside as an interior coating.
- Choosing a substitute solely because that face is easier to reach.
- Approving a transition from the section line without its detail.
Checklist
Before releasing the wall sequence
- Interior and water-facing side identified.
- Specified layer traced on the current section.
- Access and installation stage confirmed.
- Interfaces have current detail references.
- Unresolved system choices have an authorized decision owner.
Check your understanding
The exterior face will become inaccessible, but the work plan shows membrane installation after casting. What needs attention first?
