Silica dust by task: receive complete controls from preparation through cleanup

By Review.LivePublished 3 min readHow we write

A parkade repair plan names dust control for grinding, but leaves cleanup and nearby trades unaddressed. The foreman has a vacuum and masks in the truck. The actual task needs a complete received arrangement, including what happens to the dust after the grinder stops.

Review exposure across the task, not only at the cutting edge. CCOHS's silica guidance describes assessment and a control hierarchy that includes source controls, work practices, housekeeping, hygiene, training and appropriate protection. Use the competent exposure process and applicable local requirements. A public table for another jurisdiction, visible dust level or equipment purchase cannot determine this site's complete controls.

Build a task list that reaches cleanup and adjacent work

  1. Describe the actual dust-related activities. Identify the material and operations through appropriate information and assessment. Include preparation, disturbance, cleanup, maintenance and affected nearby people. Mark unknowns clearly before work. Separate the actual tasks rather than write all concrete work under one generic control entry; a saw, grinder and cleanup operation may have different arrangements.
  2. Receive the competent assessment and control basis. Have appropriately qualified people establish the actual exposure assessment, suitable method and required controls. Connect the identified machine/material to applicable instructions and the site's requirements. Retain any monitoring or further review needed. This lesson supplies no exposure number, Table 1 substitution, water-flow setting or respirator selection; a dust mask from stock cannot answer those decisions.
  3. Verify implementation and explain the work sequence. Confirm the received controls, facilities, equipment checks and necessary trained users are actually available before affected work. Give workers the current task instructions, including the assessed cleaning, waste and hygiene arrangements. Name who maintains the equipment and receives failures. Ordering an extractor cannot protect today's operation while the necessary arrangement remains incomplete.
  4. Check changed work and the whole handover. Return a changed material, equipment, occupied area or failed control through the actual response before further exposure. Receive the necessary corrections and verification for restart. Confirm the task's cleanup and remaining condition reach the next crew. A clear-looking floor or completed cutting quantity cannot demonstrate that exposure controls worked or that the adjacent area is ready.

Common mistakes

  • Listing cutting controls while leaving cleanup unassessed.
  • Assuming bought equipment establishes the exposure plan.
  • Using another jurisdiction's table as automatic site approval.
  • Declaring control effective because dust is no longer visible.

Checklist

The received silica-related task includes

  • Actual material, operations and affected people.
  • Competent exposure and control decisions.
  • Implemented equipment, facilities and trained instruction.
  • Cleaning, waste and hygiene within the assessed method.
  • Failure, change, restart and next-crew arrangements.

Check your understanding

The grinding method is assessed, but its cleanup and nearby electrician were omitted. Can work proceed with masks from the truck?

Show the answer
Return those omissions for the actual competent exposure and control review, then receive the complete implemented arrangement. Available masks cannot settle an incomplete task assessment. Keep the affected work pending or protected under its proper response until the missing decisions are received.
