Cut-off saws: receive the machine, attachment, cutting method and dust controls
A crew proposes cutting a concrete curb with an unfamiliar hired saw. Someone has a spare wheel and a hose, but the machine's exact instructions and work method have not been received. Neither familiar-looking equipment nor available water answers the cutting and dust-control decision.

Receive the machine-specific method before the cutting assignment. An official Husqvarna K 770 Vac manual, dated November 2018, describes pinching and kickback hazards, attachment limits and a dry-cutting/extraction configuration. It is a product example, not instructions for every saw. Obtain the actual identified unit's applicable manual and competent task assessment; do not generalize a wheel quadrant, water rule or respirator choice from this lesson.
Make the proposed cut a complete qualified review
- Identify the cut and its unknowns. Locate the actual work, material, proposed equipment and relevant surrounding activities. Return unknown material or concealed conditions through the appropriate assessment before disturbance. State why the cut is required, so the responsible team can consider a suitable different method rather than assume the available hired saw must be used.
- Receive the matched machine and attachment basis. Have suitably qualified personnel establish the actual model/version, applicable instructions, intended attachment and required checks. Receive confirmed condition and compatibility through that process. A spare wheel, readable diameter or different saw's successful cut cannot decide the combination. This planning check supplies no assembly, trial-run or operating procedure.
- Resolve the workpiece and operating method. Have the trained competent team assess support, possible movement, reactive forces, access and protection of others for the actual cut. Give the operator the complete received method and limits. Do not let a helper hold material by an improvised instruction or discover binding through a trial cut. Short duration does not remove the need for the actual assessment.
- Receive the complete exposure and site controls. Connect the machine-specific dust arrangement to the material and competent exposure assessment, required engineering/work-practice controls and any necessary protective program. Include other actual hazards and affected people. Obtain suitable arrangements before cutting; a hose or absence of visible dust cannot verify the complete decision. If a control fails, use the actual stop/report response instead of improvising a mask or supply.
Common mistakes
- Copying a technique from another machine's manual.
- Assuming water is suitable for every cutter configuration.
- Selecting an attachment because its nominal size fits.
- Using a trial cut or visible dust level to replace assessment.
Checklist
Before the cutter is assigned
- Known material, cut and unresolved conditions.
- Identified machine and applicable instructions.
- Qualified attachment, condition and method decisions.
- Assessed support, access and protection of others.
- Received exposure controls and change response.
Check your understanding
The crew has a hose and spare wheel, but no applicable instructions for the hired cutter. Is it ready for a short cut?
