Large openings: boards, composite sheets and the limits of a listed system

By Review.LivePublished 3 min readHow we write

The podium chase is wider than the opening on the submitted detail. Someone suggests a larger piece of the same board. Before the foreman prices or installs it, the project needs the actual geometry and a proposal that describes the complete condition.

Large is not a product category that selects its own repair. Record the opening’s full geometry, assembly, edges and services, then compare the complete proposed protection and its limits. Size can require a different reviewed system or qualified direction on the assembly itself. Neither a larger sheet nor extra fill establishes that the existing proposal still applies.

Separate the size question from the product choice

  1. Measure more than the area. Record length, width, shape, thickness and accessible edge condition with a located sketch. Include irregular corners, adjacent openings and service positions for the reviewer. State inaccessible measurements honestly. A photograph with no scale does not establish the largest dimension.
  2. Identify what the opening carries. Record every service, covering and support condition with the responsible trades. A blank-opening system is not automatically a service-opening system. Keep temporary contents visible, and describe expected additions as review questions rather than assuming spare capacity.
  3. Compare all applicable limits. Read maximum area and dimensions where stated, assembly restrictions and the complete components, laps and fixing conditions. RectorSeal’s published C-AJ-0110 blank-opening example limits its opening size and assembly conditions. It illustrates why an available fill product does not establish an unlimited protected opening.
  4. Request a complete technical response. Send the actual geometry and conditions through the project’s qualified review route. Ask whether a matching complete system, an accepted technical proposal or an assembly repair is required. A selection chart or a product sample is insufficient where the full condition remains unmatched.
  5. Plan the accepted work and its verification. Coordinate service access, required structural review and site controls with the responsible people. A firestop drawing is not a load-bearing cover or permission to stand over an opening. Obtain the applicable safe arrangements separately, then record required inspections and the final accepted condition.

Common mistakes

  • Checking area but omitting the longest dimension.
  • Using a blank arrangement around actual services.
  • Treating a protection sheet as a load-bearing opening cover.

Checklist

Send a complete large-opening condition

  • Located geometry and longest dimensions.
  • Assembly, edges and measurement limits.
  • Actual services and coverings.
  • Every applicable proposed-system limit.
  • Qualified direction, safe access and verification plan.

Check your understanding

The opening’s area is within the proposed maximum, but its long side is outside the stated limit. Is the area enough?

Show the answer
No. Compare every applicable condition, including dimension limits and complete assembly and service requirements. Record the mismatch and obtain the required technical response before affected work is released.
