Busway and large electrical penetrations: compare the complete interface
A data centre’s busway riser reaches a concrete floor opening that was sized from an early equipment outline. The delivered enclosure and cover arrangement differ. The electrical foreman and firestop foreman need a coordinated comparison before anyone enlarges the opening or hides the interface.

Start with the actual electrical assembly and a complete proposed firestop arrangement before finalizing the opening. A busway is not interchangeable with a cable bundle of similar overall width. Obtain the enclosure, relevant components, support information and access needs from the electrical trade. Then compare the complete configuration and route unresolved conditions for qualified review.
Coordinate the large electrical interface before it is fixed
- Identify the delivered equipment. Record the busway model, enclosure shape, actual dimensions and manufacturer information relevant to the opening. Identify covers, joints or other adjacent components with the electrical foreman. For a conduit bank, record its whole arrangement separately; do not transfer a busway system solely because both carry power.
- Compare the complete opening condition. Link the assembly construction, thickness, orientation, opening geometry and actual penetrant position. Read the relevant proposed system rather than a thumbnail. RectorSeal’s published C-AJ-6025 example distinguishes busway configurations, associated packing, cover flanges and supports. It shows why the equipment outline alone is an incomplete comparison.
- Coordinate the technical interfaces. Have the responsible people confirm service supports, cover installation, required application surfaces and access for verification. Identify which trade supplies each part and the actual sequence. Firestop material is not automatically a service support, and a protection drawing does not authorize an electrical or structural change.
- Review planned or existing opening changes. Obtain the required structural, electrical and protection review before coring, enlarging or moving anything. Supply the complete measured condition when the opening already exists. Do not promise that a slightly larger hole, an added board or a relocated busway will solve the mismatch without that review.
- Keep the accepted interface accessible. Issue current, located instructions with the required verification stages and release authority. Record installed equipment and any later change against that reference. Coordinate the necessary electrical safety arrangements independently; an accepted firestop record is not permission to energize, enter equipment or alter its covers.
Common mistakes
- Using an equipment outline as the complete system.
- Treating busway and conduit-bank arrangements as interchangeable.
- Enlarging a structural opening before coordinated review.
- Equating firestop release with electrical commissioning permission.
Checklist
Complete the electrical-opening coordination
- Actual equipment and relevant components.
- Assembly, geometry and whole proposed system.
- Support, cover, access and trade responsibilities.
- Reviewed opening or routing changes.
- Located verification and separate electrical release.
Check your understanding
The busway fits through the opening. Does that complete the firestop comparison?
