Blank openings: firestopping the hole with nothing in it
A laboratory has spare wall openings labelled future gases. Nobody can say when the services will arrive, and the openings are absent from the firestop log. The superintendent needs their present protection status as well as a route for any later service change.

Record an unused opening as a current condition, not a promise that a future service will deal with it. Identify its assembly and geometry and obtain a complete reviewed blank-opening proposal. When that proposal does not match, refer the condition for qualified direction on protection or assembly repair. Empty does not mean automatically harmless or interchangeable with a sealed pipe detail.
Give the unused opening a present status
- Confirm that it is actually blank. Locate the opening and identify any sleeve, abandoned item, temporary cable or concealed component. Record uncertainty with the relevant trade. An opening carrying an unnoticed service is not the blank condition assumed by the proposed drawing.
- Describe the surrounding assembly. Link the rated wall or floor reference, construction, thickness and actual opening dimensions. Include accessible edge conditions. Do not label a damaged surrounding wall sound simply because the hole can be covered from the visible side.
- Compare a complete blank-opening arrangement. RectorSeal’s public C-AJ-0110 example identifies packing, fill, an optional sleeve and assembly conditions. It is more than a fill product selected by colour. Read the actual complete proposal and its limits; this published example is not an instruction to use that arrangement here.
- Route mismatches to the right review. Record an oversized opening, damaged assembly or missing condition rather than improvising a fill. Ask the responsible qualified people whether a complete matching protection proposal or an assembly repair is required. Obtain the actual direction and planned verification before recording the work released.
- Plan future re-entry separately. Keep the opening number, present accepted arrangement and current record accessible to the future trade. Define how an addition is requested, assessed, restored and verified. Adding a pipe converts the condition into a new comparison; it does not preserve blank-opening acceptance automatically.
Common mistakes
- Leaving an opening off the log because it is reserved for later.
- Ignoring temporary or abandoned penetrants.
- Treating a fill product alone as the complete protection system.
Checklist
Account for every unused opening
- Present contents and uncertainties identified.
- Assembly, edges and dimensions recorded.
- Complete blank proposal compared.
- Unmatched conditions and qualified direction tracked.
- Future change route linked to the opening number.
Check your understanding
A pipe is scheduled next month. Can its unused opening simply be omitted from the present register?
