Adhesion tests on waterproofing: method, results and failure location

By Review.LivePublished 3 min readHow we write

Two adhesion results on a processing plant’s office wall are reported as below the required value. The emailed numbers omit the test method, instrument and observed failure location. The foreman is asked to remove the membrane, but the responsible assessor has not received a complete result record.

Confirm the test basis before interpreting the number. The public scope for coating pull-off testing on concrete distinguishes strength and failure location; the public peel-test scope concerns a different controlled test arrangement. Those results are not interchangeable measures of one universal membrane property. Obtain the specified method and acceptance, then provide the complete field record to the responsible assessor.

Keep the result connected to its method

  1. Identify the required basis. Record the selected system, substrate and specification reference with the exact test method and applicable version. Have the responsible technical team resolve omissions or conflicts. A generic request for an adhesion test is incomplete if it leaves the actual method and acceptance undefined.
  2. Confirm readiness and sampling. Obtain the required material condition, testing stage, locations, frequency and witnesses from the approved plan. Agree who performs and assesses the test. Do not borrow another system’s cure time or sample spacing merely because its test equipment looks similar.
  3. Retain the test parameters. Ask the qualified tester to identify the instrument, relevant preparation and conditions required by the method. Link each sample to its actual location. The public pull-off scope explains that equipment and test parameters affect results; a spreadsheet of values alone loses this context.
  4. Record values and failure location. Keep the reported result, units, observations and photographs where appropriate. Retain where separation occurred within the tested arrangement, as assessed by the tester. Do not label every low result a primer failure or every visible separation proof that the whole membrane bond is defective.
  5. Refer the complete finding. Follow the project’s hold and notification requirements while the responsible people assess acceptance, extent and next steps. Preserve original results. Additional testing or a proposed correction needs a defined purpose and authorization rather than being repeated until a more convenient number appears.
  6. Close the test and any repair area. Retain the approved disposition, required correction or further testing and acceptance record. Coordinate restoration of test-affected locations using the selected system’s approved arrangement. Keep those locations visible until their condition and required review are resolved.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing peel and pull values against the same assumed target.
  • Removing unsuccessful results from the record.
  • Forgetting to close a location affected by destructive testing.

Checklist

The adhesion result package

  • System, substrate and exact test reference.
  • Approved readiness and sampling plan.
  • Named tester and assessor.
  • Located parameters, values and observations.
  • Qualified disposition and preserved history.
  • Test-area repair and required acceptance.

Check your understanding

An adhesion number is low, but its method and separation location are missing. Is primer failure established?

Show the answer
Obtain the complete test record and refer it for qualified assessment. The number alone does not identify the cause or establish that the selected method and acceptance were correctly matched. Preserve the result and follow the project’s actual hold requirements.
