Elevating-platform readiness: receive the machine, route and protection basis
An electrical crew wants to drive a scissor lift across a warehouse slab where a drain trench now has a temporary cover. Yesterday's route no longer describes that support condition. The foreman needs a received device-specific arrangement before movement, not a driver's guess that the plate looks heavy enough.

Check the particular machine, route and work together. CCOHS's elevating-platform guidance connects manufacturer instructions, trained operation, pre-use concerns and site hazards such as holes, overhead obstructions and traffic. Actual local requirements and the identified machine's instructions govern. Scissor and boom equipment cannot share a universal harness answer, ground allowance or movement procedure. A completed machine checklist does not establish the capacity of a separate temporary cover.
Receive the complete machine-and-site arrangement
- Identify the device and proposed task. Obtain the actual operating instructions and required inspection status for the specific equipment. Confirm appropriately trained, authorized users and the task's load, access and operating limits. Keep the required fall protection and attachment arrangement tied to the actual machine, instructions and jurisdiction. Do not attach personal equipment to an unidentified rail or infer requirements solely from another lift's appearance.
- Complete the required checks and tests. Perform the actual pre-use inspection and function checks through qualified personnel using the identified instructions. Return defects or missing information before use, retaining the required records and restrictions. Do not bypass an alarm, disable a protective device or improvise repair to finish the shift. A replacement machine requires its own received information and checks rather than inheriting the first machine's signature.
- Receive the route, support and surrounding controls. Have the actual ground, slab or cover suitability assessed by appropriate competent people for this equipment and movement. Include changed openings, slopes, overhead hazards, weather and other traffic as relevant. Get the required protection and coordination implemented. Neither plate thickness estimated by eye nor a spotter's presence proves wheel-load capacity or resolves an electrical hazard.
- Verify the operating and emergency arrangement. Confirm the task fits the machine's limits, its required protections are usable and affected people understand the received area and restrictions. Establish the actual emergency response and capable help before operation. Return route or task changes for appropriate review; keep affected movement or work stopped while unresolved. This receiving check does not teach control operation, emergency lowering or rescue procedures.
Common mistakes
- Treating machine inspection as proof of separate route capacity.
- Applying another lift's harness or operating rules by appearance.
- Crossing a changed cover because it looks substantial.
- Assuming a spotter replaces assessed support and hazard controls.
Checklist
Before affected operation, receive
- Identified machine, actual instructions and trained users.
- Required condition and function checks with defects resolved.
- Assessed route/support and implemented surrounding controls.
- Task-specific limits and actual protection requirements.
- Prepared emergency response and further change review.
Check your understanding
The lift passed its inspection, but the temporary cover has no received capacity assessment. Can a spotter guide it across?
