Shop or field intumescent application: compare the complete delivery plan
A transit facility's team considers shop coating for exposed trusses. The decision needs the fabrication, delivery, erection and coating-completion scopes joined together rather than a simple winter-weather assumption.

Compare where the actual system can be applied and how the coated steel will reach final acceptance. Shop application can move some activities away from site, but transport, storage, connections and repairs still need a plan. A manufacturer's handling instructions require protection of the coating and correction of transport damage. That product example does not establish that shop coating is always faster or suitable for this project's members.
Keep the coating decision traceable
- Confirm the permitted application route. Ask the designer and qualified coating contractor about the selected system, exposure and proposed shop or field arrangement. Record required approvals and unresolved questions. A fabricator's available coating line is not evidence that a different product or off-site process satisfies the specified protection.
- Compare the complete activity chains. For each option, list preparation, coating, required waiting and checking, transport or site access, connections and final review. Obtain supported durations from the parties doing that work. Count site completion activities explicitly so an off-site application date does not become an unsupported whole-package finish date.
- Agree the handling and receiving evidence. Have the responsible specialists plan storage, transport and lifting in accordance with the actual steel, coating and safety requirements. Record who checks incoming condition and how locations are identified. This comparison does not prescribe slings, dunnage or wrapping as universally suitable protective methods.
- Define connection and disturbed-area responsibilities. Identify planned uncoated areas, field connections and any protection work needed after erection. Route changed details for required review. Name the party responsible for directed coating completion and repair, and distinguish that technical scope from the contractual decision about who pays for damage.
- Locate the inspection and acceptance stages. Confirm which evidence is produced in the shop, at receipt and after field work. Arrange access and notices for the actual reviewers. A satisfactory shop record should not be described as acceptance of later damage, new attachments or areas deliberately left for site completion.
- Record the chosen assumptions in both scopes. Update the steel and coating packages, delivery conditions and look-ahead together. Keep the decision's limitations visible and revisit changed sequencing or handling arrangements. The plan should tell the erector and coating crew what remains after delivery without relying on a conversation the shop never received.
Common mistakes
- Counting delivery as coating completion.
- Leaving connection touch-up between two scopes.
- Assuming protective wrapping suits every system.
Checklist
