Repair damaged intumescent: define the affected layers and reviewed method

By Review.LivePublished 3 min readHow we write

One hotel column has a gouge and another has a newly welded bracket beside discoloured coating. The superintendent needs separate assessments and repair records instead of one generic repaint instruction.

Identify the damage and affected system, then obtain the repair method required for that condition. A product's public manual distinguishes topcoat damage, intumescent damage with an intact primer and damage reaching the substrate; it also addresses welding-related damage separately. Those distinctions support assessment of the actual layers. They do not provide a universal removal boundary or prove that a photograph identifies the complete affected area.

Keep the coating decision traceable

  1. Locate and describe each finding. Record member, surface, date and visible condition with useful photographs. Identify the installed system and any new attachment. Distinguish what was observed from what is unknown; a darkened area or gouge depth should not be described as a confirmed diagnosis without the required assessment.
  2. Review the changed construction as well as the coating. Where a bracket, weld or fixing was added, obtain the necessary structural and protection review. Ask which elements require treatment and which detail governs the interface. Coating repair is not permission for an attachment or proof that the revised construction matches the applicable design.
  3. Obtain a condition-specific repair instruction. Have the responsible technical personnel define the affected layers, preparation, materials and sequence. Confirm the current selected-product instructions and project requirements. Do not transfer a cutback distance, tool choice or bare-steel repair route from a different product's manual to the installed system.
  4. Plan the repair's access and review stages. Assign a qualified crew, protect nearby work and arrange the site's safety controls. Identify any preparation or layer checks that must occur before being hidden by the next coat. Coordinate actual coat and readiness stages instead of booking the entire repair as one undifferentiated repaint visit.
  5. Record reinstatement by location. Keep material identification, directed preparation and required thickness and application evidence with each repair. Preserve interruptions and unresolved findings. A small neat patch should be labelled as completed application while required verification remains open; appearance is not the final acceptance record.
  6. Close the defined finding through the required process. Link review or test results and the actual acceptance decision to the original location. Keep any wider assessment scope or remaining locations visible. Carry the repaired system and changed detail into handover so the owner can trace both the disturbance and its response.

Common mistakes

  • Treating every scrape as topcoat-only damage.
  • Repairing paint while leaving the attachment unreviewed.
  • Closing a finding from the finished photograph alone.

Checklist

Keep the repair chain complete

  • Member, system and observed condition.
  • Changed attachment or construction reviewed.
  • Affected layers and directed repair method.
  • Access, crew and staged checks arranged.
  • Application and thickness evidence linked.
  • Actual acceptance and handover record.

Check your understanding

Does a smooth repainted surface show that the damaged intumescent system has been fully restored?

Show the answer
No. Trace the assessment, required layered repair and verification at that location. Also resolve any changed attachment; a finished photograph cannot establish the complete technical outcome.
