Getting help from WorkSafeBC: the prevention line, consultations and the advisers
The owner of a four-person tile company wants to know whether a changed mixing station needs a written exposure control plan. She has a product name and a photograph, but no clear description of the mixing task, quantities or existing controls.

WorkSafeBC’s Prevention Information Line answers health and safety questions and receives consultation requests. Urgent unsafe conditions use its urgent reporting route; a general enquiry is not an emergency response plan. Industry support and the independent government advisers have different roles. Prepare the facts and choose the relevant service, then distinguish an explanation, a pending request and an actual decision about the work.
Check the requirement against the actual work
- Describe the question and actual work. Write the task, material, location, people affected and proposed change in plain language. Attach the relevant product information and existing assessment through an appropriate channel. State what is uncertain and what the company has already checked. A question about one mixing operation is easier to examine than a request to approve “everything we do with tile products.”
- Use prevention assistance for the safety requirement. Find the current Prevention Information Line contact page and explain whether the issue is a general requirement question or an urgent condition. Request consultation when appropriate. Do not wait for an online general enquiry where immediate action or the established emergency route is needed. Record the contact, question and any information requested, without promising a response time to the crew.
- Read the material identified in the answer. Locate the actual provision, guideline, policy or resource and retain its link, relevant scope and access date. Ask for clarification if you cannot connect it to your facts. Distinguish a binding requirement from interpretive guidance and practical suggestions. Read relevant qualifications with the answer.
- Use industry and adviser services within their roles. BCCSA provides construction safety support, including regional adviser assistance. The Employers’ Advisers Office offers independent employer advice and assistance; the Workers’ Advisers Office supports workers with advice and possible representation. These government services are independent of WorkSafeBC. Check the actual service’s scope and eligibility. Contacting any of them is not regulator approval of a proposed control or a guarantee of representation.
- Turn the answer into assigned follow-up. Record what was answered, the facts supplied, any limitations and the remaining question. Identify who obtains qualified assessment or implements the required change. Confirm that revised work matches the circumstances discussed. Retain pending requests as pending and communicate the actual interim arrangements, rather than telling the crew that a consultation booking has approved the station.
Common mistakes
- Sending a vague request for blanket approval.
- Waiting on a general enquiry during an urgent condition.
- Calling a consultation request a completed decision.

Check your understanding
The owner has requested a consultation. Can she tell the crew that the proposed station has been approved?
