Coordinating podium edges and doors with the finished levels
The hotel plaza’s ballroom sill is shown 40 mm above the structural slab reference. The adjacent paver finish is shown 110 mm above the same reference. Both drawings are current, but the door and paving trades are preparing to install their work separately.

Coordinate edge details using the actual finished assembly and a common level reference. The cited building-science discussion shows how deck waterproofing must connect with wall and door arrangements. It does not establish a universal minimum upturn or a drainage fix for every low sill. Bring conflicting dimensions to the responsible designers before independent trade installations make the issue harder to resolve.
Check the edge against the complete assembly
- Confirm the same reference. Compare slab, finish, sill and adjoining wall information against one agreed datum. Identify the drawing revisions and actual surveyed conditions where required. A dimension measured from a different surface can create an apparent conflict or hide a real one.
- Show the full build-up. Include the selected protection, insulation, supports, paving or planted layers and their finished levels. Ask the responsible team to confirm any uncertain thickness or slope. Checking the membrane against bare concrete alone omits the surface that will later meet the door or wall.
- Review each edge condition. Locate doors, parapets, wall junctions and changes in finish separately. Confirm their approved water-control connections and service interfaces. Keep access, drainage, door operation and other applicable design requirements in the review rather than solving one dimension in isolation.
- Refer conflicts with enough information. Send the located section, references and actual concern to the responsible designer and technical reviewers. Request a coordinated response with receiving conditions for the affected trades. A sealant bead, a new trench drain or a lower paver band is not an automatic field solution.
- Update all receiving trades. Confirm the revised information has reached the door, cladding, waterproofing and landscape leads as applicable. Record changes to sequencing or procurement. A resolved sketch held only by one installer can leave the next trade working to the previous level.
- Retain the installed condition. Record the actual location and required measurements, photographs and review results before concealment. Link any approved change to its installed reference. Have the responsible team assess deviations rather than accepting them because the door opens and the pavers look level.
Common mistakes
- Comparing dimensions from different level references.
- Leaving the future finish out of the edge review.
- Passing one revised detail to only one affected trade.
Checklist
Before doors and finishes meet
- Common datum and current references.
- Actual proposed layer build-up.
- Located edge and door conditions.
- Qualified response to conflicts.
- Updated receiving trades and sequence.
- Installed review and approved changes.
Check your understanding
The finished paver level conflicts with the sill, but the foreman suggests adding a bead of sealant. Is the level issue resolved?
