Moisture testing a parkade slab before coating: the tests and what the numbers mean
The lower level looks dry after several warm days. A foreman photographs a clear plastic-sheet check and asks to start the traffic coating. The submittal calls for a different recorded moisture assessment, so the project manager needs to establish what evidence actually satisfies the approved system.

Match the required test, measurement basis and acceptance limit before comparing a result. The public plastic-sheet practice indicates capillary moisture; an in-situ probe method determines relative humidity within concrete. Those are different observations. The cited coating data also specifies a product-specific meter method and moisture basis. A percentage without its method and units cannot establish acceptance.
Make the result answer the specified question
- Confirm the governing requirement. Identify the approved coating assembly, current data and project test requirements. Record which method, conditions, locations and acceptance criteria apply. Ask the responsible technical contact to resolve ambiguity before booking a convenient alternative test.
- Assign competent testing. Arrange qualified personnel and the applicable full procedure, including any required equipment checks and safe access. Coordinate intrusive testing with the responsible slab and services assessment where applicable. This lesson does not supply probe-drilling depths or a testing recipe.
- Locate the actual evidence. Mark test positions on the level plan and retain required dates, conditions, equipment identification and readings. Distinguish areas affected by recent washing, leaks or other changed conditions. Do not describe one unlocated result as proof for the entire parkade.
- Keep the units attached. Record the reported measurement exactly with its method and basis. Relative humidity, moisture content and a meter indication cannot be swapped because each happens to include a number. Retain the tester’s report rather than copying only its highest figure into a message.
- Resolve failures through the system decision. Refer an out-of-limit or incomplete result to the authorized technical people. Record the required investigation, further testing or approved revised arrangement. Do not substitute a generic primer or an arbitrary wait of several days for that decision.
- Release a defined area. Retain the assessed result, limitations and actual approval boundary. Confirm whether changed site conditions require further checks before coating. Keep unresolved zones on hold and give the crew a current located release, not an assumption based on yesterday’s dry appearance.

- Exceptions have a technical decision owner.
- Defined release boundary and limitations.
Check your understanding
A meter reading and an in-situ humidity result both show a percentage. Can you compare them directly with one limit?
