Flood testing a hot rubber membrane: how long, how deep, what to record
The performing arts centre plaza is ready for its specified water test. The superintendent has a witness booking, but the form does not identify the test boundary or drainage arrangement. Filling the deck now would start an operation whose limits have not been confirmed.

Prepare the approved test plan and its record before water is introduced. Public technical guidance identifies structural loading and controlled drainage as important flood-test limits. The hot-applied system instructions also have product-specific readiness and testing requirements. Obtain the qualified project decisions rather than using a generic depth, duration or drain-blocking method.
Make the test and its evidence match
- Confirm the specified test. Identify the membrane system, test requirement, applicable procedure and people authorized to perform and assess it. Resolve whether the proposed method fits the assembly. A witness booking alone does not approve the test or establish warranty compliance.
- Obtain the qualified test arrangement. Have responsible technical people confirm boundaries, structural loading, water control, monitoring, safe drainage and response to problems. Coordinate protection of spaces below. Do not calculate a safe water depth from an example or improvise a dam on the deck.
- Record readiness and scope. Locate the actual zone and confirm the system’s required condition and completed interfaces. List exclusions, nearby activities and unresolved holds. Give witnesses current references and access through the site’s approved arrangements before starting.
- Use the plan’s observation fields. Prepare space for required times, measurement locations, readings, weather, observers and underside findings. Identify the reference for each criterion. Do not replace required monitoring with one photograph at the start and another at the end.
- Keep exceptions visible. Record the time and location of a questioned observation and follow the plan’s response process. Separate what was observed from the suspected cause. A damp mark below a drain is evidence to investigate, not automatic proof that its clamping connection caused the problem.
- Retain disposition and release. Link authorized assessment, any repair and required retest to the original record. Record controlled completion and the actual acceptance boundary. Keep failed or incomplete test evidence rather than replacing it with a clean form after correction.
Checklist
Before the water test starts
- Specified method and governing references.
- Qualified loading and drainage arrangement.
- Located zone, readiness and exclusions.
- Required monitoring and witness access.
- Exception response and observation fields.
- Linked disposition, retest and release.
Check your understanding
A test has no visible leak, but its zone and monitoring history are missing. Is that enough to describe the whole plaza as accepted?
