Vapour retarder placement: use the actual assembly and boundary conditions
The insulation crew is ready to sheet a brewery’s cooler wall as if it were an ordinary exterior wall. One side faces the brewery floor and the other faces the refrigerated space. The foreman needs the actual cooler assembly answer before a familiar warm-side phrase becomes an unreviewed installation decision.

Use the actual assembly and boundary conditions, not a remembered rule that every interior face receives poly. DOE’s educational guidance explains that the need and position of vapour control depend on climate and construction. A cooler, a below-grade wall or exterior insulation can make a standard habit an inadequate starting point. Describe the condition to the responsible designer and follow the received detail rather than redesigning the layer yourself.
Ask for the answer to this wall
- Describe both sides of the boundary. Identify the spaces, intended use and available operating-condition information on each side. Distinguish design assumptions from conditions actually measured on site. Include unusual cooling, moisture exposure or adjacent unconditioned space in the question. Do not turn today’s hand-held temperature reading into the design condition for every season or operation.
- Check the entire approved assembly. Bring the current section, specified vapour-control product, insulation and other relevant layers to the review. Ask what the detail already requires and where it changes at edges or openings. Avoid solving an unclear note by copying a normal exterior-wall detail into a cooler or foundation condition with different surroundings.
- Refer an unclear placement or proposed change. Give the responsible design and enclosure team the actual location, materials, boundary description and current reference. Ask for a received assembly answer and any affected connection details. Do not choose a layer solely from a slogan, add an impermeable facing or reverse the construction informally. Product suitability and the assembly’s moisture behavior belong in the technical decision.
- Issue and check the located answer. Provide the accepted information to the affected crews, including transition responsibilities and pre-cover access. Record which location and revision the answer covers. Use its actual installation and inspection requirements. If another wall has different spaces or materials, compare it separately rather than extending the first answer by appearance.
Common mistakes
- Treating interior as a universal synonym for warm side.
- Using one measured day as the whole operating design.
- Copying a conventional wall into a cooled or below-grade assembly.
- Adding or reversing an impermeable layer without the technical answer.
Checklist
Prepare a placement question with
- Spaces and intended conditions on both sides.
- Current section and actual material proposal.
- Unusual cooling, exposure or assembly differences.
- Responsible technical answer and connection details.
- Located issue, pre-cover check and remaining limits.
Check your understanding
The cooler’s brewery-facing surface feels warmer today. Can the crew choose the vapour-retarder placement from that alone?
