Spray-foam thickness and density: actual methods, located results and rechecks

By Review.LivePublished 3 min readHow we write

An energy-review team requests the foam records for a townhouse. Two located depth readings differ from the drawing, and the daily report does not clearly connect the density result to the material and area installed.

Thickness and density answer different questions, and each needs its actual acceptance basis. NRC’s CCMC 13697-L listing gives a product-specific minimum site density and identifies the installation-standard measurement basis. That is not a universal value or sampling frequency for all foam. Obtain this job’s required qualified methods, locations and records before covering the work, with any changed reading connected to its responsible assessment.

Make each result traceable to installed work

  1. Identify the actual checking requirements. Read the specified foam product, required installed depth, relevant evaluation and quality requirements. Establish the applicable density criterion, checking method, frequency and competent responsible person. Keep a requirement that has not been confirmed visible as a question. Do not convert a laboratory property or another foam’s density into the acceptance threshold for the supplied product.
  2. Plan and record the located measurements. Use the actual accepted measurement and sampling methods with appropriate instruments, safety and control-layer protection. Identify the area, date, installer and material information needed to interpret each result. Record individual readings and their locations rather than only a reassuring average. Do not instruct unqualified workers to probe or cut near services or assume every sample disturbance requires the same repair.
  3. Review departures and their extent. Connect a short, inconsistent or uncertain result to the required assessment. Establish the affected area, possible further checks and authorized correction through the qualified process. Additional foam is not automatically permitted for every product, cure condition or method. Distinguish a planned correction from completed work and retain the actual application and any renewed access controls it requires.
  4. Retain rechecks and the received handover. Link the corrected location, required result and responsible review to the original issue before concealment. Restore affected components using their actual requirements and record any remaining limitations. Give the receiving team clear area status and access to the relevant records. A daily form with every box filled is not a pass unless its results, acceptance basis and required decisions support that outcome.

Common mistakes

  • Using another product’s density criterion.
  • Hiding individual readings behind an average.
  • Assuming an extra pass is always the approved repair.
  • Calling a complete-looking daily form an accepted installation.

Checklist

Retain the foam-check trace

  • Actual product, required depth and density basis.
  • Qualified method, frequency and measurement responsibility.
  • Located readings, samples and material identification.
  • Received departure assessment and authorized correction.
  • Required rechecks, restored components and area handover.

Check your understanding

The average depth is satisfactory but two recorded locations are short. Can the area be covered?

Show the answer
Use the actual acceptance criteria and responsible assessment of those located readings. Retain any required extent review, correction and rechecks before the handover. A satisfactory average does not automatically erase an individual departure or authorize concealment.
