Dense-pack cellulose: cavity method, required density checks and restored components

By Review.LivePublished 3 min readHow we write

A rooming-house renovation has a suspected gap near the top of a previously insulated cavity. The crew proposes more material through another hole, but the actual cavity boundaries, product and verification records remain unclear.

Dense packing needs its actual product, cavity method and verification basis. Greenfiber’s current guide describes core sampling or material-weight-and-cavity-volume checks for its dry dense-pack method, with results recorded for the relevant assembly. Use the supplied product’s applicable instructions and qualified checks. Sound from knocking on a wall, a full-looking opening or total bags for the building cannot independently establish every cavity’s installed density and coverage.

Make the cavity method and result traceable

  1. Confirm the actual cavity and product scope. Identify framing, depth, connected spaces, obstructions and existing components using appropriate safe assessment. Read the approved product and permitted application method. Keep unknown cavities or suspected hazardous material with their competent review before drilling or filling. An old wall’s exterior dimensions cannot automatically supply its usable fill volume or show that every compartment can be reached.
  2. Arrange suitable receiving and installation work. Confirm required containment, access openings, equipment, worker instruction and controls from the actual method. Locate obstructions and separate compartments for the qualified installation plan. Retain the surrounding weather, vapour, air and rated-component requirements. Do not prescribe a universal hose pressure, tube pattern or extra opening that might damage a service or other required layer.
  3. Use the required density-checking method. Establish the actual measurement responsibility and acceptance basis. Where material and volume are used, retain the correct unit, assembly volume and material actually installed, including relevant partial material and hopper differences. Where samples are required, use the suitable qualified sampling method and record its limits. An overall building average does not prove that each separated assembly received the intended installation.
  4. Record differences and restored components. Refer an uncertain or inadequate result for its required extent assessment and authorized correction. Retain actual rechecks and the repair of openings or disturbed layers under their applicable methods. Connect the completed area to its receiving decision and unresolved limits. Adding material should follow that response, not serve as a substitute for finding what the original method and record failed to establish.

Common mistakes

  • Using a knock sound as proof of density.
  • Assuming exterior dimensions give every cavity’s volume.
  • Averaging material across unrelated assemblies.
  • Adding fill without the required assessment and restoration.

Checklist

Retain the dense-pack evidence

  • Actual product, assembly and permitted method.
  • Located cavity boundaries, obstructions and safe receiving work.
  • Required density check and responsible qualified person.
  • Assembly-specific results and relevant material reconciliation.
  • Received correction, restored openings and rechecks.

Check your understanding

The total building bag count seems right. Does that prove the obstructed wall cavity is correctly filled?

Show the answer
Use the actual required assembly-specific method and appropriate assessment of the obstruction and coverage. Retain the cavity’s result and any necessary correction and rechecks. An overall quantity cannot by itself establish the distribution or condition within that wall.
