Blown attic depth and quantity: the current chart, located checks and actual use
A triplex attic appears level at its markers, but the crew’s recorded material use does not match the applicable coverage calculation. The lead needs to verify the inputs and actual installation before declaring the required thermal value achieved.

Use the current chart for the actual product and application. Greenfiber’s May 2026 attic card distinguishes initial installed and settled thickness, coverage and minimum bag requirements. It requires both the applicable thickness and material quantity. A deep-looking attic is therefore not the whole check. Match the chart’s area and framing basis, then reconcile actual measurements and material use instead of assuming a discrepancy has one cause.
Check the chart, area and actual material together
- Select the correct chart and target. Confirm the supplied product, bag weight, application type and required thermal value. Locate the applicable installed and settled-depth entries and the coverage basis. Distinguish dry loose fill from a stabilized application with different conditions. Keep an ambiguous row or an unavailable current chart as a question rather than calculating from a familiar chart for another bag.
- Establish the actual coverage area. Use suitable measurements and the chart’s stated framing or net-area basis. Identify excluded areas, edges and changes rather than transferring an overall floor area without checking it. Calculate required material in consistent units and apply the appropriate complete-bag ordering basis. An estimate for purchasing is useful, but the completion record still needs the area actually installed.
- Retain located depth and material evidence. Check the required installed depth with suitable access and the actual measurement arrangement. Record representative locations, changed edges and any protected openings. Reconcile material actually used with stock, partial bags, waste and movement to other areas as relevant. A delivery count is not automatically an installed count, and a single marker does not establish every attic location.
- Resolve a discrepancy before claiming completion. Check the input, count and measurement evidence with the responsible installation assessment. Obtain the permitted correction and required rechecks where needed. Do not simply add a guessed number of bags or declare fluffing from one count difference. Retain the actual result and receiving decision, distinguishing chart-based installation evidence from a claim to have measured the building’s entire energy performance.
Common mistakes
- Using another product’s chart.
- Mixing installed depth with settled depth.
- Counting deliveries as material installed.
- Changing the card instead of resolving the actual discrepancy.
Checklist
The attic quantity check retains
- Current product, application and thermal target.
- Installed and settled-depth entries and chart basis.
- Actual covered area and consistent-unit calculation.
- Located depth checks and reconciled material use.
- Received discrepancy response and completion evidence.
Check your understanding
The marker shows the required depth but the material count is unexplained. Is the chart check complete?
