Roof-work safety beyond the harness: receive the task, access and complete protection
The roofers leave after their package, and a mechanical crew is booked for equipment work next morning. The roof record says fall protection in place, but the new crew's route passes a rooflight and its staging needs differ. The next task needs its own complete received arrangement.

Look beyond equipment issued to individuals. HSE's UK roof-work guidance identifies planned access, edges, openings, fragile surfaces and competent instruction as connected concerns. Use those brief planning principles within the actual local requirements and technical assessment. A rooflight's appearance, a marked route or a harness inventory cannot establish the specific protection needed for the next task.
Receive the roof for the actual next crew and task
- Describe the work and how people reach it. Identify the task location, access, necessary movement, materials and adjacent activities. Bring current information about openings, rooflights and unresolved roof condition to the competent assessment. Do not send someone across an uncertain surface to inspect it informally. A short maintenance visit keeps its actual access and protection questions.
- Receive the qualified protective arrangement. Have competent people establish the actual suitable method, surface/access basis, required collective and individual protection, and emergency arrangements. Connect the installed condition and necessary checks to that decision before exposure. This lesson specifies no guardrail assembly, cover fixing, anchor strength or rescue method. A roof handed over for one crew's work is not blanket acceptance for every later activity.
- Coordinate staging and responsibilities. Receive the planned material/equipment placement and handling interfaces through the appropriate technical and safety processes. Identify who maintains protections and how proposed moves or temporary changes are authorized. Do not remove a barrier for delivery and leave reinstatement as an unnamed next-shift task. The roof's structural loading and equipment suitability remain separately assessed requirements.
- Give the arriving crew current limits and change response. Confirm the applicable training, instructions, verified arrangement and responsible contacts are received. Apply the actual plan's response to weather, deteriorating conditions, altered access or changed work; do not invent a wind number or keep working until a scheduled meeting. Record unresolved items and the necessary protected hold while competent decisions and implementation are completed.
Common mistakes
- Treating a harness list as the complete roof-work arrangement.
- Assuming a rooflight is load-bearing because it looks solid.
- Leaving protection reinstatement without a responsible receiver.
- Extending one trade's task acceptance to different staging and access.
Checklist
The next roof-work handover retains
- Actual task, access and required movement.
- Competent roof-condition and protection decisions.
- Verified installed arrangement and emergency basis.
- Reviewed staging and protection-maintenance roles.
- Crew instruction and immediate change response.

The roofers' work passed yesterday. Can today's mechanical crew use a different route past the rooflight?
