Incomplete design risk: mapping what is not drawn against the date you need it
The data-centre single-line drawing is current, but equipment-pad information and cable-tray routing remain unresolved. The slab activity is approaching and procurement has its own decisions to make. Calling the electrical design eighty percent complete hides which unanswered information could affect the next irreversible commitment.

Map the missing information by package and the decision that needs it. An overall completeness percentage cannot tell the team whether a pad, opening or purchase is ready. Trace the relevant procurement and construction dependencies, agree the actual answer and review dates with the responsible people, and keep unresolved work visible. A planning assumption is not permission to install an unreviewed fallback.
Replace a completeness label with a package need-date map
- Define the unanswered information precisely. Identify the system, area and package, current references and decisions still needed. Separate missing design, coordination questions and pending required approvals. Describe what is usable and what remains conditional; avoid marking the entire discipline complete because one drawing has been issued or an earlier item was answered.
- Work back from the real commitment. For each gap, identify purchasing, fabrication, review and field dependencies. Establish the date the applicable answer must be received, allowing for the actual downstream work. Confirm these dates with the affected people. A slab milestone alone does not reveal every earlier decision, and a requested date is not an agreed design delivery.
- Agree an owned response and assess alternatives. Bring the specific gap and consequence to the responsible design and coordination roles. Record the answer route, agreed commitments and any separate early package. Evaluate sequence options or fallbacks through their necessary technical and commercial review. Do not nominate oversized sleeves, changed supports or temporary works as convenient substitutes for unresolved design.
- Follow received answers through their dependencies. Link the risk entry to the response, current drawing status and affected commitments. Confirm the appropriate receiver understands what the answer resolves and what remains open. Escalate when the need date becomes threatened. Close the gap only when the actual required information and reviews are received, not when an RFI number exists.
Common mistakes
- Using a discipline-wide percentage as package readiness.
- Setting every need date to the installation milestone.
- Calling an unreviewed physical change the fallback.
- Closing a design gap when the question is merely submitted.
Action list
For each unresolved package, leave
- The precise missing information and current references.
- Its affected commitments and received-answer need dates.
- An answer owner and actual agreement status.
- Reviewed alternatives separated from assumptions.
- A linked response, receiver and remaining-gap status.
Check your understanding
The equipment-pad package arrives, but tray routing is still unanswered. Can the electrical design risk be closed as a whole?
