Wood framing quality checks: the structure before the insulation inspection

By Review.LivePublished 3 min readHow we write

On an infill rowhouse, two hold-down locations differ from the structural detail and a plumbing opening has changed a top plate. The drywall crew is asking for the floor. A quick punch list cannot decide the correction or the closing date.

Walk the framing against the current structural drawings and coordinated requirements before arranging the required inspection. Mark departures by floor, grid and element, assign their qualified review and verify the resulting work. Keep moisture-related release separate from the structural check. A neat frame, an inspection booking or a corrected photograph does not establish every prerequisite for closing the walls.

Make the framing walk traceable

  1. Prepare a location-based route. Use current structural details, approved truss information and the opening schedule. Identify the actual checks for bearing and load-path details, connectors, specified members, blocking, bracing and openings. Separate the framer's completion check from inspections and decisions reserved to qualified professionals or the authority.
  2. Mark differences without designing repairs. Locate missing or misplaced components and questioned cuts or openings on the plan. Record safe measurements and the drawing reference, then send the issue through the approved review route. Do not move a hold-down, enlarge a hole or cut a truss because a checklist suggests the drawing ought to fit.
  3. Verify the reviewed disposition. Link each issue to the actual design response, authorized method and required follow-up. Ask the qualified people to confirm what they must see before it is hidden. Keep pending responses distinct from completed corrections; the framer's 'done' message does not automatically release an inspection item.
  4. Check the closing conditions. Identify the project's actual moisture criteria and who verifies them before enclosure. Canadian wood guidance explains that moisture measurements depend on equipment and material-related factors. Use the approved measurement and review process; do not transfer a single percentage, instrument reading or drying period from an unrelated job.

Keep one marked walk plan and an issue list with dates, responsible people and status. Add the relevant inspection result and conditions when issued. Check coordinated requirements that affect the next trade, including unresolved openings and any required blocking or penetration review. This framing walk supports the process; it neither replaces a professional inspection nor certifies hidden assemblies by appearance.

Common mistakes

  • Making an on-site structural alteration before review.
  • Calling a completed correction an issued inspection pass.
  • Using a universal moisture percentage or calendar wait to release enclosure.

Checklist

Before requesting the framing inspection

  • Current drawing and product references.
  • Located structural and coordination departures.
  • Reviewed disposition and required verification.
  • Actual inspection result and open conditions.
  • Separate moisture and closing release.

Check your understanding

The questioned connector is corrected, but the wall's moisture review remains open. Is it ready for drywall?

Show the answer
Keep the two statuses separate. Record the connector's required verification and wait for the actual moisture-related closing decision before releasing the affected wall.
