A dimensional error found late: the first hour after the wall is found in the wrong place
The vehicle shop's mezzanine stair opening is measured away from its intended location. A duct has already been hung through the route shown for the corrected opening. Moving either element now affects more than the trade that first noticed the error.

Pause the affected dependent work through the site's safe process, verify the dimensional record and send the located effects to the appropriate qualified reviewers. Preserve current drawings, layout information and installation observations. Obtain the authorized disposition before anyone cuts, moves or rebuilds. A late error needs a clear first response; it does not need an instant technical solution or automatic charge to the nearest trade.
Establish the problem before changing work
- Contain the affected activities. Identify which work relies on the questioned location and tell its foremen what is paused or restricted. Use the proper safety route if the condition may create an immediate hazard. Keep unaffected work distinct where competent review permits it; a hurried whole-job stop or restart should not substitute for assessing the actual issue.
- Verify the reference and measurement. Check the current authorized drawing, datum, grid, revision and relevant approved change. Have competent people verify measurements using safe access and appropriate equipment. Record the measured condition and limits, with located photographs. An obsolete drawing or uncertain datum can produce a convincing but wrong error report.
- Map the interfaces and options. List installed and planned adjoining work, access, clearance, performance and programme questions that the reviewers must assess. Label possible options as unreviewed: accepting a departure, modifying adjoining work or rebuilding may each require different decisions. Do not convert an option sketch into permission to alter a structural element or service.
- Obtain disposition and keep responsibility separate. Record the qualified technical response, necessary authority, approved method and follow-up verification. Route commercial effects and responsibility through actual records and terms. A layout sheet is evidence to assess, not by itself a finding that one trade owes every resulting cost.
Send one coherent initial package: the current requirement, verified observation, marked plan, affected work and questions needing decision. Add missing information through dated updates instead of waiting until every consequence is priced. Tell each affected foreman which decision is issued and which remains pending. Update the layout and field documents through the approved route once the disposition is actually authorized.
Common mistakes
- Building the response on an unchecked drawing revision or datum.
- Cutting or moving work from an unreviewed option.
- Treating a layout record as a complete liability decision.
Checklist
Prepare the late-error response
- Safe containment and affected activities.
- Current references and competent measurements.
- Located interfaces and known consequences.
- Qualified disposition, authority and verification.
- Separate commercial and responsibility review.
Check your understanding
The duct appears easiest to move. Should you direct that option while waiting for the engineer?
