Firestop and fireproofing interfaces: resolve the receiving condition and sequence
The joint crew reaches a fireproofed deck above a masonry wall. One installer proposes scraping a strip to make a clean receiving surface. The superintendent needs the actual joint and fireproofing requirements before any protected material is disturbed.

Compare the complete accepted joint or penetration arrangement with the applicable fireproofing assembly before deciding how the two meet. Fireproofing is part of a protection arrangement, not automatically disposable overspray. Resolve the receiving condition and trade sequence through the responsible technical review. Do not assume all interfaces require bare steel or that every existing layer can remain untouched.
Read both sides of the interface
- Locate the actual construction. Identify wall, deck or beam, receiving surfaces and the installed protection. Gather the applicable fire-resistance assembly and complete firestop configuration, including reviewed alternatives. A close-up showing grey coating cannot establish its identity, required thickness or condition; have the appropriate competent personnel determine the necessary facts.
- Read the receiving and sequence provisions. RectorSeal HW-D-0220, for example, specifies particular spray-applied protection before its joint forming and fill materials in its defined deck arrangement. That example shows why scraping by habit can conflict with a complete system. It does not decide the treatment of another deck, beam or proposed product combination.
- Resolve the interface before disturbance. Supply actual conditions and conflicting requirements to the responsible reviewers and affected trades. Confirm who installs first, what receiving surfaces are required and how applicable checks will be made. Ask about compatibility or an unmatched configuration rather than assuming two individually recognized products establish a recognized complete interface.
- Track any disturbance through completion. If material is damaged or an accepted response requires alteration, coordinate the authorized repair arrangement with the responsible protection trade. Link affected locations, current technical direction and required verification. Keep repaired fireproofing and installed firestop statuses distinct until the applicable checks and release are complete; neither trade’s finished photograph closes the other’s obligations.
Common mistakes
- Treating protection as unwanted residue without reading the system.
- Combining separately recognized products without reviewing their interface.
- Closing both trade records after only one trade’s check.
Checklist
Coordinate the protected receiving surface
- Located assembly and actual protection.
- Complete applicable configurations.
- Required receiving condition and sequence.
- Qualified response before disturbance.
- Repair, verification and separate release records.
Check your understanding
The installer prefers bare steel for adhesion. Is that enough to remove the existing fireproofing?
