Combustible pipe: checking the complete collar-and-wrap arrangement
Collars have been ordered for the hotel’s plastic drains. At one opening the underside is difficult to reach, so someone proposes using the wrap strips in the van instead. The foreman needs a complete reviewed configuration, not a convenient substitute selected at the opening.

Choose the protection arrangement from the complete system for the actual combustible pipe and assembly. A collar and a wrap are not automatically competing alternatives: a system can require both, with other components and stated attachments. Record the exact pipe condition and check the named configuration before choosing how the work will be done.
Read the component combination
- Confirm the pipe condition. Identify the actual plastic, pipe description, dimensions and any covering or sleeve with the responsible trade. Record the assembly, opening and service arrangement. Do not describe an unidentified plastic line as PVC merely because another floor uses PVC.
- Locate the complete configuration. Read every applicable item, drawing and alternative in the proposed system. STI’s public C-AJ-2125 example names permitted pipe types and describes a wrap-strip arrangement with a collar, as well as a specified alternative device. Its alternatives have their own conditions; they are not permission to mix the components freely.
- List what must be supplied together. Connect the required fill, wrap or device, collar where applicable, attachments and support information to the chosen configuration. Distinguish required components from optional ones. A box labelled firestop does not identify which configuration its contents complete.
- Check installation access before promising a method. Ask the qualified installer whether the reviewed configuration’s required sides and fixing locations can be reached safely. Refer an inaccessible arrangement back through the technical review route. Convenience does not authorize moving the collar or converting a combined arrangement into a wrap-only detail.
- Control the field issue and record. Show the opening number, selected configuration and current reference. Plan the required verification before components disappear. Keep an unresolved alternate separate, and check a later pipe or assembly change against the system instead of retaining the old release.
Common mistakes
- Treating every plastic pipe as the same listed penetrant.
- Assuming collar and wrap always mean either one or the other.
- Selecting an alternate solely because it avoids difficult access.
Checklist
Confirm the combustible-pipe arrangement
- Pipe identity and dimensions confirmed.
- Assembly and actual opening recorded.
- Complete selected configuration identified.
- Combined components and attachments understood.
- Access or alternate questions resolved before release.
Check your understanding
The proposed system includes wrap strips and a collar. Does having the strips allow the crew to omit the collar?
