Intumescent application conditions: record air, steel and dew point checks
Cold steel and damp morning conditions affect a transit facility's planned coating shift. The foreman needs actual measurements and the selected requirements before releasing the affected area.

Measure the conditions the selected product requires and compare them with its actual limits before application. Air temperature, steel surface temperature, relative humidity and the required relationship to dew point may all matter. A water-based product's published instructions require these checks and continued monitoring. Heating the air for a set period does not by itself establish that the steel or other conditions meet the requirements.
Put the requirement into the work record
- Identify the limits and responsible person. Put the current product instructions and project requirements in the work pack. Record who is qualified to measure, assess and communicate the conditions. Keep application requirements separate from storage, preparation and later drying requirements; one temperature entry may not address all those stages.
- Arrange suitable measurements. Confirm the instruments and actual measurement procedure with the qualified personnel. Identify the working locations and surfaces that need assessment. A comfortable trailer reading does not describe cold roof steel or another application area, and a weather forecast is not the required record of the substrate.
- Record the comparison clearly. Capture the time, location, air and steel readings, humidity and required dew point information. State the governing requirement and decision rather than writing only 'weather good'. Have the responsible person clarify a missing or uncertain value before the affected application is treated as ready.
- Plan the response to unsuitable conditions. Coordinate the proposed enclosure, heat, ventilation or waiting arrangement with the contractor and site team. Resolve safety and technical requirements before implementation. A portable heater is not a universal remedy, and work in a different area still needs that area's own condition assessment.
- Monitor through the relevant period. Follow the actual required frequency and respond to changing conditions. Record interruptions and the locations or coats affected. A satisfactory start-up check should not be used as permission for the whole shift when the product or project requires later measurements and decisions.
- Connect the findings to coating records. Keep condition evidence beside the member and coat information. Notify the coordinator when readiness or continuation is uncertain, and update the look-ahead accordingly. When questions arise later, preserve what was measured and done rather than reconstructing favourable conditions from memory.
Common mistakes
- Using the air reading as the steel temperature.
- Treating a start-up check as a whole-day approval.
- Calling heating complete without reassessing conditions.

Can the crew coat because the heaters have been running for two hours?
